World Chocolate Day
🍫 Happy World Chocolate Day! 🍫
Long before it became a €126 billion global industry, chocolate had a very different kind of value. The Maya civilization is believed to have used cacao beans as currency, viewing them as sacred gifts from the gods. Warriors were even given cacao drinks for strength before battle.
As we celebrate one of the world’s most beloved treats, here are some delicious facts and stats about chocolate that show just how powerful this indulgence truly is:
🔹 Market & Consumption
The global chocolate market was valued at approximately €126.5 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach €148 billion by 2028, growing at a 3.2% CAGR. Europe leads global consumption, accounting for over 45%, with Germany, the UK, and Switzerland topping the list. In Portugal, average consumption is 1.5 kg per person per year—about one delicious square a day!
🔹 Top Consumers
Switzerland leads the global chart in per capita consumption at nearly 11 kg per person annually, compared to the global average of 0.9 kg.
🔹 Dark Chocolate on the Rise
Dark chocolate now makes up around 20% of global chocolate sales and is growing at 5.7% annually, thanks to increasing demand for low-sugar, high-cocoa options and perceived health benefits.
🔹 Sustainability & Ethical Concerns
The chocolate industry continues to face challenges around sustainability and ethics. Around 70% of the world’s cocoa is grown in West Africa, yet only 10% of producers are certified sustainable. Sadly, an estimated 1.5 million children are still involved in cocoa farming, underscoring the need for ethical sourcing.
🔹 Fun Fact
Raw cacao powder contains ~2,060 mg of theobromine per 100 g, which is over 10× more than dark chocolate, and delivers potent flavonoid-driven health perks, from improved brain and heart function to better skin, gut, and immunity. However, this compound is toxic to dogs, so treat yourself, not your pet!
💡 From ancient currency to modern indulgence, chocolate continues to influence economies, cultures, and emotions. This #WorldChocolateDay, enjoy responsibly – and support sustainable, ethical chocolate. 🍫
